The Arvon Foundation run residential creative writing courses which aim to challenge, inspire and transform your writing. For over 40 years we have created an ideal environment for thousands of writers, where newcomers can begin writing and existing writers can improve their craft and find new sustenance and inspiration.

Our courses take you away from everyday life and place you gently in one of our four beautiful writers’ houses, insulated from the busy world of email, internet and mobile phones. We will give you time and space to write, supported by expert practical tuition and the encouragement of a community of writers. With two published and professional writers as tutors – and a mid-week guest – our simple formula continues to boost the writing lives of thousands of writers every year. Courses run from Monday afternoon to Saturday afternoon.

‘Arvon is the single most important organisation for sharing and exploring creative writing in the UK’

Britain’s Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy on becoming one of Arvon’s newest patrons

‘I did Arvon when I was about 20 and it was a tectonic, life-changing experience – just that full thrust of spending eight hours minimum per day attending to writing tasks… the collective energy of so many writers rattling away inside their own heads, in the same place… it was a moment midway through the week that I realised, categorically, how determined I was to become a professional writer. Courses like yours are that important to people arriving.’

Paul Abbott, creator of Channel 4’s Shameless
